Tinkerbell and Cookie Monster

During the month of April I have had the pleasure of making a few cakes. First was my nephew Patrick's Number 5 cake which was a whole new experience for me. Next, I was asked by a friend/business aquiantance to make a Tinkerbell cake for her daughter. For this cake I borrowed a Tinkerbell figurine to put on top of the cake. I also used my flower cutters for the first time to make all the little flowers. I also had to figure out how to make the petals for the larger flower. To get the veins to look right in it, I washed a leaf from a fake plant to use as a press. I also laid the petals over a paper towel roll to get the shape. I used gum paste for the larger flower and the grass because it dries harder and keeps it shape better. I also used a shimmer dust on the cake to look like fairy dust.   The birthday girl and all her little friends loved the cake!

C IS FOR COOKIE. Another friend and business aquiantance asked me if I could make a cookie monster cake for her nephew. For this cake I traced out the face and cut it out like a stencil. I then laid it out on top of the rolled fondant and cut out all the pieces. I was told later that the cake was a big hit!

In other news, I have to admit that I absolutely hate writing on cakes freehand. My hands are shaky at the best of times and I get really nervous writing on cakes. If you have this problem as well, I suggest putting your buttercream iced cake in the fridge and let it harden so if you have to rewrite on your cake, the messed up writing is easier to scrape off. I purchased the cut outs for this reason. I couldn't afford the real deal, so I bought cut outs meant for Play-doh. They aren't as good as the real thing and I think I may need to upgrade and let my daughter have the play-doh cutters. In case you wondered why all my recent cakes have the same cut out lettering, now you know why!

Patrick's birthday!

My nephew celebrated his 5th birthday during the Easter weekend, and I offered to make his cake.  The theme was Lightening McQueen from the movie Cars. Patrick and I looked online at many pictures and what he wanted was a "number" cake with Lightening on it. I said that I could make that for him, even though I had never made a number cake before.  In the end it all turned out and this is his cake.
